In this blog, I am responding and writing an evaluation of the film Selma. This movie is based on true events that happened in America during 1964.
The film Selma speaks to how African Americans in many southern states fought to earn an equal right to voting. According to the constitution at the time blacks had the right to vote but there were so many determinants that were set in stone that made it so difficult for them to earn voting rights. In Alabama the clerk made them recite the preamble and name all of the county judges in the state and even President Johnson did not make this a priority at the time which caused Dr. King to lead peaceful protest through marching. Beyond the main plot the film had a very deep meaning behind it, the film showed the perseverance of Dr. King and many others, similarly how many people refused to give up on something that they wanted badly. The film also displayed how there is power in numbers and that as collective group things can get done when people come together. This film and many of Dr. King’s protesting habits spoke to how violence is not the answer, not matter how hard things got or unfair Dr. King continued to encourage non-violence. I personally really enjoyed the film, I thought that it portrayed the events really well and the timeline was right. Additionally, I liked how there were triumphs throughout but they overcame and at the end there was success. Being a black male in America sparked my interest in the film because it showed how people were treated back in the 1960. Furthermore it was also nice to be able to compare how times were back then to how things are now and measure the progress that has been made. Realizing that this movie was based off of historical events in our country’s history I had prior knowledge of how the movie should go even before I viewed it. From these things they shaped my evaluation of the film, I had a sparked interest, and prior knowledge.

I agree with how great and how far we have come in such a short amount of time and to see what the future holds. I like how you talked about Dr. King's protesting and the non violence he pushed because it was very important throughout the film and I know that is one thing that they pounded into my head learning about Dr. King. His ability to stay calm explains the type of man he was and the patience he must have had.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you have a great perspective on the movie and what it is about. I like how you talked about how far we have come in such little time and it truly is amazing. Dr. King was the main character in this movement and movie but there were so many other people who made a huge difference along the way as well.
