This blog is reflecting on a Ted Talk done by Jennifer Golbeck explaining why social media likes say more about a person than we think. New York Times |
The ted talk that I took the time to watch and learn about
was titled “The Curly Fry Conundrum: Why Social Media “Likes Say More Than You
Might think” by Jennifer Golbeck. The
talk was about how perspective employers and other companies can access many
things on social media. Golbeck explained that from social media likes
companies can tell a lot about a person and they use it in their hiring
process. Additionally, she explains how
companies like Target use social media for advertising to their consumers. Being
in the millennial generation I really took heed to this ted talk, with it being
based on social media it struck my attention. In our everyday lives my
generation and I go on and use a variety of different social media sites and
most of us use them loosely. When I say loosely I mean that we post things on Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter as if we are in our own private world. This ted talk and
many other examples emphasize how social media really works and how important
it is for people to be careful with what they are posting and liking. To no surprise
I was not shocked when Golbeck explained how much information companies can
really get from the things that people liked on Facebook and how it indirectly
spoke to their interest and hobbies. The ted talk really pushes how companies
and future employers use social media but from personal experiences I
understand how many other people use social media as well. In our generation
people will resort to social media right away to look at a person’s post or
their pictures, from these things people draw many assumptions as to the type
of person they are dealing with. I think it would be best that people using
social media sites be cautious to what they are doing and understand that they
have to be careful and aware online.
This is a very good TED Talk to choose! It sounds very interesting and I agree with what you're saying about how people should be cautious about what they're posting. I think some people get too comfortable with what they post on social media. And that can get them into trouble someday.
