In this blog you will read about a TED Talk that was done on gun violence. My goal was to touch on a pop culture topic that is relevant to Americans today. The link to the video is hyperlinked in the title of the talk.
I watched a TED Talk titled “Why Gun Violence Can’t Be Our New Normal” by Dan Gross. The talk
was very informative about popular culture and what is going on in our society.
Dan was not trying to persuade to get rid of guns completely rather he mainly
wanted more regulation to be put on guns. The Brady Background Checks are a
wonderful thing, they run the background checks for many people that try to buy
guns from any store. I agree with Dan that these checks need to continue to be
expanded so that the people that guns are not being put into the wrong hands.
He started the talk off with an emotional appeal by sharing the story as to how
his brother was killed in a accidental shooting from a stray bullet. This
instantly got my attention and he also mentioned that about 90 families lose
family members due to gun violence daily. I personally believe that America is
coming to accept gun violence as a norm in our society and it is frightening to
know that this is a reality. I believe that gun laws need to continue to be
strengthened including background checks for those that want to buy guns. One
thing that I am aware of is that many people that would not pass a background
check are able to get guns from a variety of different unregulated sources. I
think this is an issue that our government needs to continue to fight because
gun violence breakup many families. My fear is that our society is becoming too
comfortable with this violence and we start to view it as a norm. I think that
we need to continue to try and combat these negative actions. Guns in the home
is another thing that Dan Gross mentioned because he showed a statistic that
many mass shootings create a daily terror and that many of the weapons used by
these people come from guns in the home. I personally think that it would be
hard to regulate guns in the home because there are so many law abiding
citizens that just want to own guns. I do not think that they should be
punished but I do believe that we should educate people more about how to
properly store and take care of guns that are in the homes. This way guns do
not end up in children’s or the wrong peoples hands and helps keep everyone
safe.
I completely agree with you, background checks is a must and more than that they have to be better and more effective. I also agree with you that education is a must with all firearms they are highly dangerous, you should take a hunter safety class before you are able to buy or get a gun just to know the safety. But all in all great article and very good topic in today's day and age.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with your blog post and the opinion you posted. I believe there should be more restrictions put on guns to eliminate the number of deaths caused by guns each year. It sounds like an interesting TED Talk and I will have to watch it some time.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you on this subject. Guns should be allowed and people should have the right to own but there are way too many people in this world that shouldn't have a gun but do. There needs to be more and stronger requirements to buy a gun and more safety for people who do own guns. It is a great topic and very relevant in today's world.
